The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge and Refuge staff are disappointed to announce the Barge Trip to Long Island scheduled for Saturday, August 24, has been canceled. This decision to cancel was based on several factors, including unresolved mechanical issues with the boat that operates the barge and weather predictions that show 10-20 mph winds and 1-2 foot swells. These conditions make for an uncomfortable 45 minute journey to the trailhead on Long Island, but more importantly, they prevent the Refuge’s emergency vessel from operating should the need arise. This decision was not made lightly and we know how much Friends' and community members look forward to and enjoy this annual trip to Long Island. There remains one additional trip scheduled this year as part of the Wings Over Willapa and space is still available. For more information on that trip, scheduled for Friday, September 20 visit: https://friendsofwillaparefuge.org/wings2024_friday In partnership with Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, we will schedule another trip to Long Island next summer. Thank you for your understanding and interest in the wildlife refuge. Pat Welle President, Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge
