From the April 8 Board Meeting MinutesThe Willapa National Wildlife Refuge has received formal WHSRN (Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network) approval which will make us WHSRN’s 97th site. The dedication is scheduled for May 13 at the Heritage Museum in Ilwaco.

Snowy plover signs are posted and nesting has begun at Leadbetter.

New maps for kiosk panels at Tarlatt and Riekkola are prepared, but not yet mounted. A large map of all three refuge units is being developed to be mounted at the refuge headquarters. (These three maps, sent by email, are formatted to be printed on 8 1/2”x11” paper.)

Work is continuing on the new refuge brochure.

Work is progressing on a large grant ($1.5 million) for boardwalk, ADA access, and kiosk shelter for the Riekkola South Bay trail. After she has prepared this grant application she will ask the board grants committee (Barbara Norcross-Renner and Clay Nichols) to submit a request to the local Templin Foundation for matching funds.There is also work being done on another grant for survey work on the bay.

Mock emergency airboat rescue training exercise, in conjunction withthe fire department and the coast guard, will take place at the Refuge headquarters.

The refuge budget for next year is unknown. The refuge is down three positions (in addition to earlier positions lost).
